Don Miguel Caballero, a successful labor contractor in Texas' RÌo Grande Valley and later, in California's Salinas Valley, enjoys the good life: prosperity, the respect of his community, a marriage of thirty years, six bright children. But gradually all he has worked for begins to unravel. Three of his daughters give their versions of the disintegration of an idyllic way of life.

Cynthia Leal Massey is on the adjunct English faculty at San Antonio College. Her fiction has appeared in national and regional publications.
